Orphan Medical pleaded guilty ... to pay a $20 million fine
The Daily News (New York) ran an article that covers how a drug company named Orphan Medical pleaded guilty in Brooklyn Federal Court to a felony and agreed to pay a $20 million fine for its overaggressive marketing of a drug called Xyrem or GBH, a pill so powerful it's classified as a date-rape drug. Orphan improperly pushed GBH on doctors as a treatment for obesity, fatigue, pain, depression, insomnia and other ailments, the manufacturer has admitted. The company even paid a psychiatrist tens of thousands of dollars to promote the drug, and he suggested in speeches across the country that Xyrem was safe for children and the elderly. In truth, its main ingredient is so powerful and fast acting that it can cause seizures or death if improperly used, the feds said.
